The walk, led by Mile End Memories, will be followed by a discussion with three authors who have written about Mile End: Myriam Beaudoin, Saleema Nawaz, and Pierre Anctil.<\/p>\n<p>** Chosen as a <a href=\"http:\/\/encyclo.bibliomontreal.com\/decouvrez-les-realisations-2018-des-bibliotheques-de-montreal\/\">notable initiative 2018<\/a> for the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough in the Montreal library system **<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reservations required<\/strong>:\u00a0Register by telephone or in person at the library \u2013\u00a0514 872-2141.<br \/>\nThere will be\u00a0<strong>two groups, one in English and the other in French<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sunday 30 September<\/strong> 2018,<strong>\u00a01:00<\/strong> to 4:30 pm<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/ville.montreal.qc.ca\/plateau\/bibliothequedumileend\">Biblioth\u00e8que Mordecai-Richler \u2013 quartier du Mile End<\/a><br \/>\n5434 avenue du Parc, Montreal (near Saint-Viateur, 80 bus)<br \/>\nThe walk will follow a loop, departing from and returning to the library. Her years teaching young Jewish girls at the Belz Hassidic school in Outremont inspired her to write <em>Hadassa<\/em>, published in 2006. Mile End is at the heart of this novel in which two love stories are intertwined, one about a young Qu\u00e9becoise teacher and her Jewish students, the other of the unlikely meeting of an immigrant and a Hassidic woman questioning her society. <em>Hadassa<\/em> was awarded the <em>Prix des coll\u00e9giens<\/em> and the <em>Prix France-Qu\u00e9bec<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Myriam Beaudoin holds a master\u2019s in <em>cr\u00e9ation litt\u00e9raire<\/em> from McGill University and will soon be publishing her fourth novel.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4488\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4488\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4488\" src=\"http:\/\/memoire.mile-end.qc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/SaleemaNawazColour-400x600.jpeg\" alt=\"Saleema Nawaz\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"http:\/\/memoire.mile-end.qc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/SaleemaNawazColour-400x600.jpeg 400w, http:\/\/memoire.mile-end.qc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/SaleemaNawazColour-768x1152.jpeg 768w, http:\/\/memoire.mile-end.qc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/SaleemaNawazColour-683x1024.jpeg 683w, http:\/\/memoire.mile-end.qc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/SaleemaNawazColour.jpeg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4488\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Saleema Nawaz \/ photo: Dallas Curow<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Saleema Nawaz<\/strong> is a Montreal-based author, born in Ottawa. In 2008, she published <em>Mother Superior<\/em>, a collection of short stories, and in 2013, <em>Bone &amp; Bread<\/em>. The novel describes the intense and complex relationship between two orphaned sisters, Beena and Sadhana. They live in an apartment upstairs from a bagel bakery located in the heart of Mile End. The business belongs to their father, an immigrant from India. After the death of their parents, the bakery is taken over by their uncle, a traditionalist Sikh who finds it very hard to understand his nieces.<\/p>\n<p><em>Bone &amp; Bread<\/em> was a finalist in the CBC Canada Reads competition in 2016 and won the Paragraphe Hugh MacLennan Prize for Fiction awarded by the Quebec Writers&#8217; Federation for the best work of fiction published in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4487\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4487\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4487\" src=\"http:\/\/memoire.mile-end.qc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Pierre-Anctil_visite-600x410.jpg\" alt=\"Pierre Anctil\" width=\"600\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"http:\/\/memoire.mile-end.qc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Pierre-Anctil_visite-600x410.jpg 600w, http:\/\/memoire.mile-end.qc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Pierre-Anctil_visite-768x525.jpg 768w, http:\/\/memoire.mile-end.qc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Pierre-Anctil_visite-1024x700.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4487\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pierre Anctil \/ photo: Richard-Max Tremblay<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Pierre Anctil<\/strong> is a full professor in the History Department of the University of Ottawa. He specializes in the history of immigration to Canada during the first half of the 20th century, in particular that of Montreal\u2019s Jewish community. As a result, he has studied several writers who lived in Mile End or whose works portray the neighbourhood, including poets A. M. Klein and Jacob-Isaac Segal, and writer Mordecai Richler. He translated <em>Lekhaim!<\/em>\u00a0by Malka Zipora, which chronicles Hassidic life in Montreal.
