During the night of 8 April 1973, a huge fire gutted a run-down rooming house on Park Avenue causing the death of eight people. The inquiry revealed that the tragedy was far from accidental: the building had been allowed to turn into a firetrap and the actual owners were hiding behind straw owners. The house that was destroyed was also the grandest remnant of the distant time when Park Avenue nourished illusions of grandeur.
Yves Desjardins, the author of the forthcoming Histoire du Mile End, will recount the sordid details of this tragedy, a reminder of a period when Mile End was one of the poorest neighbourhoods of Montreal – but also a time when its revitalization was about to begin.
