Talk: Le Châtelet

Le Châtelet, a century of history: from mansion to housing co-op

Sunday November 27, 2:00 p.m.

Fairmount Court (Le Châtelet), en 1912 [Collection de la coopérative d’habitation Le Châtelet]

On Park Avenue, just north of Fairmount, there is a rare example still standing of a Belle Époque mansion – from the time when the avenue was a prestigious residential address. The house and workshop of architect Joseph Perrault, built at the beginning of the 20th century, were later transformed into apartments. However, the building suffered from long years of neglect, until finally its tenants mobilized in 1978 to transform the building into a housing cooperative.

The speaker, Pierre-Alain Cotnoir, has long been a member of the Coopérative Le Châtelet. He will recount the numerous challenges that accompanied the transformation of this heritage building into a coop.
