The Montreal Carmelite Garden
its history, its symbolism, its value
Jean-Paul Simard, gardener and art historian
The monastery of the Carmelites of Montreal has been located in Mile End since 1896. This talk focuses on its garden: its origins, its symbolism, and its value as a historical garden. Also, a review of the controversy over the future of the monastery and its garden which led to its designation as a Québec historic site in 2006.
Jean-Paul Simard holds degrees in art history and conservation of the built environment. He is a horticulture and parks manager at the City of Montreal, and a member of the board of directors of Mile End Memories.
