The result of a long battle and decades of mobilization, the fight for free access to abortion and contraception remains one of the most important struggles of the feminist movement. This struggle has been waged on several fronts, notably in the legal and political arenas, but also by a network of feminists committed to action on the ground.

During this talk, we will look at the history of the Montreal Women’s Health Centre. Active since 1975, in the midst of the legal and political controversies of the times, the Centre has always actively campaigned for access to free abortion. It also introduced a new approach that promotes bodily autonomy and health management for and by women.

Our speaker, Melanie Leavitt, is a member of the Mile End Memories board of directors. She has been giving presentations and leading walking tours on women’s history, trade unionism, and Montreal’s garment industry since 2011.
