Talk: My grandmother’s restaurant

The influence of Jewish Romanian cuisine in Montreal – talk by Joshua Wolfe

Much of what Montrealers think of as typical Jewish cooking – smoked meat, brine pickles, steak spices – shows a strong Romanian influence. Joshua Wolfe’s grandparents all immigrated from Romania before the First World War and ended up living in what is now known as Mile End. One grandmother ran a restaurant near the Main. Joshua will share some intriguing findings of his research and provide an overview of the history and culture of Jewish cooking in general, the relationship between Kosher and non-Jewish cooking of the Balkans – and maybe even his grandmother’s dishes.
