Lecture by Yves Desjardins and Claudine Schirardin
Since 1982, the Mile End Citizens Committee has worked to maintain quality of life in the face of constant change and to develop the sense of neighborhood identity. There are many accomplishments to its credit, such as the preservation of the Rialto Theatre, or, more recently, the naming of Lhasa-de Sela Park.
Yves Desjardins will note that Mile End has always been fertile ground for citizen activism – there was already a citizens’ committee in 1893! Claudine Schirardin, one of the founders of the current committee, will describe the challenges and principal successes of the group. The talk will be followed by a discussion on current issues, with representatives of many local community groups attending.
This lecture is part of the consultation launched by the Citizens’ Committee to imagine Mile End’s future.
